Yorkshire Terrier Coat: The coat is silky to the touch and fine and should not be coarse and rough. Their coats are hair rather than fur that grows at a decent rate with no undercoat. This breed does not shed.
General Information: The "Yorkie" is the nickname for this breed. They are great lap dogs that would love nothing more than to sit on their owner's lap all day. They have a very playful, bright nature with a just a hint of attitude. They make for a loyal true companion.
Behavior Characteristics: This breed is lively, fearless and intelligent so they focus all their energy and affection on their owner. Some people say that this dog requires the most human interaction than other breeds.
Yorkshire Terrier Personality: The Yorkie likes to be respected and gets territorial, assertive and independent. If treated with love and care they can mesh well with older children and other pets.
Grooming Care: Daily grooming of this breed is required. If the hair on the head is grown long it can be tied with a bow or rubber band. You can cut their hair short if you are not using this dog as a show dog. A regular routine should be set up to clean the eyes, ears and teeth.
Behavior Training: The Yorkie is a quick learner but can be difficult to train if they become willful. Training must be firm and consistent with lots of praise. They do not like to be ignored and require lots of human interaction.
Daily Activity: Minimal Activity is required for this breed. Due to their short stature they are great for apartment, condo or small home living. Short leashed walks are perfect exercise for the Yorkie. They can entertain themselves by playing with shadows, tug of war and just lounge around in the sun.
