General Information: This breed was originally used as a herding dog. They almost became extinct in the 1800's, but rebounded in the early 20th century by breeders in Stuttgart. The breed has evolved and is used for many activities like: a watch dog, herding, tracking and police work.

Behavior Characteristics: Rottweilers are loving , but can be powerful and serious when need be. They have been perceived as a mean or vicious breed that is very intimidating because of their big bulky stature, but do extremely well with the family environment. Early training and  socialization is required because this breed can be protective and territorial of their environment and family.

Rottweiler Personality: Each rottweiler has its own unique personality ranging from protective of family and territory, affectionate, clownish, loving, friendly or bullish. This breed needs to be trained and socialized at an early age. They need to be around children when they are puppies in order for them to adjust but should always be watched when around small children because of their sizer and power. They can adjust around other dogs, but can get somewhat aggressive or combative if not socialized properly or regularly.

Grooming Care: Grooming is easy because of the glossy, short coat. Regular brushing should be done with a firm brush to help remove loose or dead hair and reduce shedding. Bathing using a mild shampoo or dry shampooing should be done when needed to avoid removing essential oils from skin and coat.

Behavior Training: Rottweilers excel if the right opportunity is present being that they are extremely eager to learn. Obedience training is a must because when bored or not stimulated this breed can become destructive and mischievous. Unlike most other breeds a firm and stern training method should be used on this powerful, stubborn  breed. They are intelligent and perform well in a variety of sports activities.

Daily Activity: This breed is not active when indoors so a medium or large sized fenced in yard is exactly what this breed needs for their daily exercise.  Exercise should be at least 2 hours a day so long walks on a secure snug fitting leash would be great.
