General Information about Poodles

Body Weight: 45-65 lbs
Body Height: 15-21 inches
Body Color(s): any solid color

Poodle Coat: Dense, harsh coat that is either corded or curly. The coat can come in many colors and some have a Parti patterned 9not accepted in a show dog) with little shedding.

General Information: The old breed comes in 3 varieties:
 
1. Standard: oldest of the three was bred to be a water dog to retrieve game fowl.

2. Miniature

Breed Characteristics: The poodle is a graceful, agile, attentive, intuitive, athletic, intelligent breed with a sense of humor and love. They are a breed of dignity, distinction and elegance.

Poodle Behavior: The poodle is loyal and devoted to their family which is why they are one of the most popular breeds in the world. They enjoy human interaction and are overly sensitive responding to your family emotions. This breed gets overly attached to one member of the family and gets separation anxiety when that person is gone.

There are 3 varieties of poodle:

  1. Standard Poodle: Amiable and does well with kids and other pets in the home.
  2. Miniature: Amiable and does well with kids and other pets in the home.
  3. Toy: Can be neurotic and is best suited for homes with older well behaved  children.

All three types are reserved around strangers which makes them good watch dogs because they tend to bark excessively.

Grooming Care: This breed requires extensive grooming with professional grooming every 6-8 weeks. There are 3 styles of grooming for the poodle breed:

  1. The Pet Clip
  2. English Saddle
  3. Continental

Using mild or dry shampoo should be used when necessary. To prevent knots and tangles daily brushing is recommended. Ear and dental hygiene should be performed on a regular basis. Poodles are prone to allergies, epilepsy, skin conditions, cataracts and heart disease.

Behavior Training: Early socialization & obedience training is required but manageable being that they are eager to please and highly trainable. They are sensitive so training needs to be gentle, patient and rewarding. They excel in retrieving, obedience agility and learning tricks.

Daily Activity: They enjoy exercise like walks on a secure leash, swimming, family playtime and running in a fenced in backyard. They can thrive in an apartment, condo or small home as long as they are getting some form of outdoor exercise.
