American Pitbull Coat: The American Pit Bull has a smooth, short, glossy coat that is stiff to the touch with an average amount of shedding. There is no standard for the coat color they can have any solid color or a mixture of colors. That depends on the coats of the parents of each dog.
General Information: This breed came about in the 19th century and was known for its strength and athletic ability of a bulldog and the gameness of the terrier. With these mixed the pitbull was used to catch semi wild cattle and hogs, driving livestock, family companions and most of all for protection.
Pitbull Characteristics: Powerful, muscular, medium sized, solidly built dog. With the nickname "warrior" , the pitbull displays courage, agility, grace and strength. For the people they love they show a gentle, loving demeanor.
Pitbull Personality: The pitbull is considered to be affectionate, intelligent, good natured, devoted and very loyal to their family. Recommended for homes with well-behaved older children. They become aggressive around small household pets and other strange dogs, but do well with dogs they have been raised with. This breed is overly protective of home, territory and family, but usually are not used as guard dogs because they tend to be so friendly in nature. It is unusual for the pitbull to show aggression but are not a good fit for a apathetic or novice owner.
Grooming Care: Regular grooming with a firm brush will help remove loose and dead hair. Dry shampooing or bathes should be done when needed. Health concerns are usually congenital heart disease, allergies to grass, hip dysplasia and cataract. Breed excels in warmer climates.
Behavior Training: Eager to please this breed is very obedient. Early socialization with extensive, intense training is crucial. You should be firm but gentle because they don't do well with harsh methods. Train with patience, fairness, praise and reward. With talents like weight pull, obedience and agility this breed wants to learn.
Daily Activity: To keep the pitbull happy they should receive plenty of strenuous exercise like hiking, mountain biking, secure leash walks, playing ball and Frisbee with the family. They are okay in apartments or condos but do much better with a medium sized fenced in back yard.
