Maltese Coat: The Maltese has a hallmark pure white,long, straight coat that is very silky with no undercoat and no shedding.
 
General Information: This is one of the oldest European toy breeds. Usually owned by the wealthy and Royalty. The Maltese has a regal, graceful demeanor as well as being affectionate and well mannered.

Breed Characteristics:This breed is social, intelligent,
playful,highly animated and exude delight and joy. They do enjoy being the center of attention no matter who the person is or the situation. This companion is bright, devoted and loving.

Maltese Behavior: This breed is trusting, gentle and obedient. Their good nature allows them to be cuddled, loved and hugged. They can tolerate other pets and well behaved kids but not ill behaved or inconsiderate behavior from pets and kids. They form a special close bond to one person in the household. Being very sociable they do not like to be alone for long spans of time. They are over protective and will bark and bite to protect their family and territory if they feel threatened. The Maltese is an agile and fearless breed. They are totally committed to their home and family.

Grooming Care: To keep the integrity of the pure white coat and prevent knots and tangles daily combing or brushing is required. With the color and the amount of hair on this breed regular bathing or dry shampooing is recommended. The eyes tend to run with fluid and get stray hair in them from staining  daily wiping or cleansing of the eye area is required. The Maltese is prone to skin disorders, respiratory and eye problems, indigestion and tooth loss. Their long coats are not appropriate for hot or damp climates. 

Behavior Training: Crate training is the best house breaking training method for this breed. Training is best early on but must not be harsh in nature. The best results will come from gentle , patient, rewarding training. Obedience training should be minimal due to their obedient nature.

Daily Activity: Low levels of activity is required for this breed. They can thrive in apartment, condos or small homes. They do enjoy outdoor walks using a secure leash, play time with family or other dogs or running and romping in a small yard.
