Body Weight: 11-32 lbs
Body Height: 5-9 inches
Body Color(s): solid sable, cream or red ; black & tan, chocolate & tan,  gray & tan or brindle, tan and fawn  

Dachshund Coat: The coat can come in 3 different varieties and 2 sizes.

Coat Types:

1. Smooth Haired Dachshund-short, smooth, straight and glossy. Hair should be equal in length along the entire body of the dog.

2.  Wire haired Dachshund-wiry, coarse, harsh looking with broken  appearance.

3. Long haired Dachshund- straight and long coat, with hair on the underbelly, chest, ears and legs that may be somewhat feathered and longer.

Sizes:

1. Standard
2. Miniature

General Information: The Dachshund was bred in Germany for hunting badger, foxes and otters.. The Mini version was bred to hunt hare and stoat.  

Behavior Characteristics: This breed  can be very clownish but mischievous at times. They are no longer seen as the hunters they once were but rather as a companion.  Signs of aggression and being timid should not be visible in this breed. They love being around people and getting lots of love. The Dachshund is considered to be a friendly dog, who is very outgoing.

Dachshund Characteristics: A tenacious, lively and fun loving dog that can be very irritable and over protective. Not recommended for homes with children. This breed gets very nervous around other larger breeds because of their short legs and tiny size unless raised around each other. Does not like to share owner with other breeds unless other toy breeds are not snippy.

Grooming Care: The Smooth haired dachshund doesn't need a lot of grooming just the occasional wipe down with a damp towel or dry shampoo to remove the loose dead hair. However, the long haired variety needs a lot of grooming due to the low stature of the body type making them prone to getting burrs, twigs and sticks. These should be removed daily along with a daily brushing routine to prevent knots and tangles.

Behavior Training: This breed is at times stubborn making routine training difficult. They need consistent and firm training. The can get their feeling hurts so be sure to correct them in a soft gentle manner. Numerous methods of training can be used on this breed.


Daily Activity: Not much exercise is needed for the dachshund even though they are lively and vivacious. Their exercise regime should be spread out through the day because the tire easy. So short walks are a great way to get them the exercise they need. Back problems are common in this breed so running and high jumping should not be allowed.
