Chihuahua Coat: There are two varieties of coats long and smooth.A long coat chihuahua has a slightly curly or flat longer coat without an under-coat. A chihuahua with a smooth coat will generally be soft and glossy. The smooth coat will be have a full texture all over the body, but pretty scanty on the ear and head areas. Both coats can come in any color or mixture of color patterns. This breed tends to be an average shedder.
General Information: The Chihuahua is one of the oldest and tiniest breeds of dogs in the USA. It got its name from the Chihuahua region in Mexico and it is rumored to once be owned by Aztec royalty. The breed in the USA is smaller than the Aztec breed but has a well defined bone structure with well defined muscles.
Breed Characteristics: The Chihuahua comes in all colors and unique personalities. Each dog has characteristics all their own. It is difficult to lump them into one set of traits so we will generalize the main ones. They have the longest life span of any breed and that could be in part due to their energy, gracefulness and somewhat human like expressions.
Breed Personalities: The Chihuahua is unbelievably loyal and devoted to its owner. They do tend to bond with one or two people more than a whole family. Despite their tiny stature they are fearless, bold and very protective of their owners. They thrive on huge amounts of attention and that makes for a dog that is loving, gentle and sweet tempered. Chihuahua's are wary of strangers and are good watchdogs. Being that they tend to bond with only a few people this is not an ideal dog for a family with children or other pets except other chihuahuas .
Grooming Care: Minimal grooming is required for both coat types, but long coats will need more grooming than the smooth coats. It is advised to brush out the long coat several times a week. Use a mild shampoo to bath either type once a month. When bathing take precautions to not get too much water in their ears because they are prone to ear infections. Teeth need to be brush to prevent tooth decay and loss. Chihuahua's can have several health concerns like soft spot, open font,eye problems, and heart disease. This breed does better in warmer climates and should be protected when taken outside.
Behavior Training: This breed needs patience, consistency and love to train. They respond better to softer, gentler reinforcement. Chihuahuas need to be trained and mingle with other dogs early for them to be sociable.
Daily Activity: Perfect for small places, apartments or condominiums. You can cover most of their exercising with chew or pull toys inside. They do enjoy getting our for walks, but it is best to use a harness rather than a leash because of their delicate skeletal structure.
