Bulldog Coat: Close and short to the skin, straight, shiny. It is very smooth with a fine texture. This means there should be no fringe ,curling or feathering. The coat color ranges from red brindle, solid red, solid white, fallow, fawn, and different colors of brindle. The bulldog is an average shedder.
General Information: Came from the Asiatic mastiff, the Bulldog originates in Great Britain. They were used for bull baiting and against fearse carnivores like bears and lions.
Breed Characteristics: Moderate in size the bulldog stature is low to the ground and heavy. They are very courageous, amiable, strong and kind. It is a dignified breed who is never aggressive or vicious. Bulldogs have a weird, wacky sense of humor with a passive demeanor.
Breed Personality: The bulldog is extremely affectionate,amazingly devoted to their family and truly a loyal dog. They are a good match for children because they are dependable and gentle. You shouldn't feed them in front of young kids who will disturb them because they get very possessive. They do bully other dogs that they were not raised with in the home. Bulldogs need a tremendous amount of human affection to maintain their happiness and piece of mind. They don't strain themselves barking unless the really have to.
Grooming Tips: Occasional brushing of your bull dog with a firm bristle brush is all that's needed for the coat. Bathing does not need to be done unless necessary or you could even dry shampoo the dog. The bulldog is known to slobber and drool so you will want to clean around his mouth daily to prevent odor. The get a variety of issues that range from bad eyesight, skin irritations, hip, knee and breathing problems. With their large heads almost all bulldogs must be delivered by C-Section. They are are highly susceptible to heat stroke and have a hard time with adverse weather extremes. As well as the slobbering they are famous for having an active gastrointestinal system.
Behavior Training: The bulldog is very stubborn so obedience training is a must at an early age. They should have an owner who is willing to be dominant, but they do not take well to heavy handed or harsh methods. Firmness, patience , praise and reward is the best way to train the bulldog.
Daily Activity: The Bulldog needs to stay fit with daily exercise on a leash. To keep them from being so stubborn you should have short term play time. The bulldog can adjust to city living like apartments or condos. Even though they need small spurts of exercise they are basically to very active inside and don't need big yards for running.
