Boxer Coat: The Boxer's coat is shorthaired and is smooth, shiny and fits very snuggly to the body of the dog. The coat colors can vary from colors like fawn, red & brindle. Boxers can have spots or strips of white on their underbelly, chest, and one or all four feet and in some cases even on their face. This breed tends to shed at an average rate.
General Information: The Boxer's origins are traced back to the 19th century in Germany. They generally have a stocky build and are considered a medium sized dog. They are very strong and have a reputation of having strong jaws with a powerful bite. Because they do have somewhat of a fearless personality they have been known to be used in search and rescue missions, police work and military work.
Breed Characteristics: Boxers are a very loyal breed with a high energy level. With such a broad chest it sometimes seems like they walk wiith pride, not arrogance. They stand in stoic positions and are extremely intelligent, loving, friendly and make great companions.
Boxer Personality: The Boxer is bold, patient, dignified, and very self-assured. They are very curious and can be protective of their owners and wary of strangers. When threatend they can be fearless and courageous. They have an amazing sense of hearing and are keenly alert so they are make excellent guard dogs. They are great dogs for children and other breeds if they are raised with them as puppies. Boxers crave human companionship and can be very michievous especially when they have been left alone for long periods of time. If they do not get the attention they crave they normally will lean towards bad behavior (ie. chewing) to get it. This breed is a good match for a person or family who are not home a lot.
Grooming Tips: Minimal grooming is required for the boxer because of the snug, close, tight, short haired coat. To maintain the coat you could do occasional brushing with a firm bristle brush. This breed produces essential oils to keep their skin moist so bathing should only be done when absolutely needed. Boxers tend to have some major health concerns like sub-aortic, cardiomyopathy, hip dysplasia and sub-aortic stenosis. Minor health problems can tend to plague this breed as well like: allergies, tumors,epilepsy and skin conditions. Boxers need to be on a strict proper diet to keep their sensitive stomach in balance. This breed is best suited for indoor life because their short hair can't keep them warm.
Behavior Training: Being quick and clever the boxer needs routine obedience training. They owner (master) should have a dominating personality to keep the dog under control but not be harsh in their discipline. Behavior training should be firm, fair and constant. Boxers also love to learn and perform tricks.
Daily Activity: The Boxer needs and wants to play on a regular basis outside. A medium sized fenced in backyard is ideal for this breed so that he can thrive playing with the family while getting the exercise he needs. Being a curious breed owners should try and find toys or chews to keep them occupied. When they get bored they are prone to be destructive.
