Labrador Retriever Coat: Double coat breed. Hard in texture the outer coat is short, straight and very dense. On the other hand the under coat is weather resistant, soft and protects the dog from all kinds of ground cover, water and the cold. Chocolate, yellow and black are the main colors that their coat comes in and they are an average shedder.

General Information: Originally from Newfoundland during the 1700s, they were imported in the 1800s to England. With their endless positive traits and extreme versatility this breed is a very popular family pet.

Breed Characteristics: The Labrador Retriever also known as the "lab", is a well balanced, athletic, strong medium sized breed. Armed with a sweet personality these dogs are outgoing and very friendly.

There are 2 types of Labs:

1.The American: Lanky and tall
2.The English: Heavy and thick 

Both types are considered great companions and adored for their loving nature.

Labrador Retriever Behavior: Extremely devoted, intelligent and loyal who thrive for human relationships with lots of attention. This breed is a great family pet that meshes well with other family animals. They are somewhat timid and on edge with strangers and make for good guard dogs. Loneliness,boredom and destructive behavior will result if this breed is left alone or denied human affection for long periods of time.

Grooming Care: Regular brushing with a firm bristle brush is needed paying special attention to the undercoat to prevent knots and tangles. Bathing with mild shampoo or dry shampoo should be done only when needed. Eye disorders, hip and elbow dysplasia are a few health issues this breed is prone to.

Behavior Training: Easy to train. Basic obedience and socialization are recommended at an early age. They need sensitive training and don't take well to harsh methods. This breed responds well to respect, firmness, fairness, consistency and reward to succeed. They are known for their amazing work ethic in search & rescue, guides for the blind, service dogs and police work.

Daily Activity:Energetic, high spirited and delightful this breed needs a lot of exercise. The best fun for them is playing with the family, but they also enjoy long leashed walks,swimming and just being able to romp in a fenced in backyard. They can adjust to apartment living as long as they are able to still be stimulated with outdoor exercise.
