German Shephard Coat: This breed has a double coat and three varieties.

1. Rough coat
2. Long hair
3. Long rough coat

The under coat is soft and dense while the outer coat is straight, harsh and thick. Colors vary from black & cream, sable, solid black and black & tan. Heavy shedding occurs with this breed so daily brushing helps remove all the dead loose hair.

General Information: Max Von Stephanitz developed this breed in Germany in the 19th century. Their dedication to work and versatility as a companion the German Shephard was the first breed used as a guide dog for the blind.

Behavior Characteristics: The German Shepherd is highly energetic, adaptable, strong, curious and extremely dependable. They possess classic beauty with an extreme intelligence. Great endurance and stamina make this breed highly agile with a stunning appearance.

German Shephard Behavior: The German Shepherd is
bold,alert, fearless and hard working. They are praised for their unbelievable loyalty, devotion and courage. They do not like being left alone for long periods of time because they thrive for human affection. They are excellent guard dogs and very weary of strangers. They for the most part, mesh well with other household pets that they are raised with. This Shephard is not well suited with an apathetic or novice owner. 

Grooming Care: Daily brushing is required for this breed to remove the loose dead hair. Use a mild shampoo to protect the coat and bath only when necessary. Their health issues usually are digestive problems, epilepsy,flea allergies, elbow and hip dysplasia, blood disorders and chronic eczema.

Behavior Training: Early extensive training and socialization is required for this breed. As with most breeds they do not take well to heavy handed, harsh methods. Train with respect, fairness, firmness, consistency and reward. They are extremely talented and very fast learners who are obedient. For sporting tricks try them at fly-ball,ring sport, obedience, agility and tracking. This breed is best known in police work, but has been used as a blind guide dog, military work and search & rescue.

Daily Activity: German Shephards are at their best when they are given a task to do. Taking them for a walk on a well fitted leash is just the type of strenuous exercise that they love along with a large fenced in yard to run and family play sessions. They can make it in small living spaces like an apartment as long as they get the outside exercise they need.
