Golden Retriever Coat: Golden Retrievers have a two part coat that is weather resistant and repels water. The legs and tail have longer hair and the undercoat is soft and dense in texture. The outer part of the coat is resilient, firm and can be straight,wavy or a slight curl. Even though this breed is considered a heavy shedder they coat is lustrous, rich and varies in the shade of gold from gold to cream.
General Information: Lord Tweedmouth from Britain in the late 1800's wanted to have a dog that was kind, loyal, energetic and spirited. Some of the criteria was to have the ability to retrieve items and loved water. They are the definition of brains and beauty.
Breed Characteristics: The Golden Retriever is an energetic, gorgeous breed that is fairly large. They have a awesome reputation as a companion or family pet. They have excellent hunting capabilities on water and land while being well proportioned and sturdy. This breed is very perceptive and agile.
Golden Retriever Behavior: They are highly intelligent, lovable and polite. They have sweet personalities
that make them loyal family pets and very eager to please while exuding confidence and charm. They need a lot of human affection and do not like being left alone for long periods of time or they can become destructive and mischievous. They are perfect family dogs because they are patient and gentle with almost all children. Not only are the friendly with all other pets but to humans as well. When they are excited they will bark as a way to greet people. Because they need so much human affection this breed is not well suited for a 2 career family.
Grooming Care: The Golden Retriever needs daily brushing with a firm brush. Unlike a lot of large dogs they require frequent cleaning. Dry shampooing is best and when needed use a mild shampoo and water. Their biggest health problems are skin allergies, hip dysplasia and cataracts. A strict healthy diet is required so they get overweight.
Behavior Training: Training is very easy for this breed. They are very obedient and make for good service and therapy dogs. They excel in performing tricks, agility and drug detection.
Daily Activity: The Golden Retriever needs daily exercise. Family play time is a good form of exercise where they can interact with kids and retrieve balls or other toys.They do best in a medium or large sized fenced yard for the exercise but can make it in an apartment type setting.
